i went flying yesterday for a photo assignment and thought it might just be a drab sky and light for the shoot. We went thgrough some rain and then the clouds opened up and it was exactly what we needed to have. Then on our way back to Charlottesville, the sky was spectacular and the sun was coming in and out of clouds, nice clouds that don't totally make life dark, but the kind that let some sun shine through and around. It was awesome.

Today I have a wedding with Jack Looney and then tomorrow we are shooting the trailer for a documentary film on the history of the Church.

four women prepare three meals a day for 140 kids that live in Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua. It's on the east coast of Nicaragua.

these women cook about 150 pounds of rice and beans a day, which the kids eat for their three meals a day.

I was in dc a few months ago with my wife, for a weekend away. Life was crazy at the time, but when is it ever not crazy!! Despite the craziness, we had a couple days off in the city and enjoyed some museums and good food. The weather was wonderul and the flowers were in bloom.

this is my friend, @rob_jefferson. we went to college together and now he is working in Richmond, with @caseytempleton. Rob was helping me figure out some light for a shot I was going to do with the bride and groom I was taking pictures of on Saturday.

After we figured out the light, we went into to get them, came back out and the fog was gone.

Still got a sweet shot of the couple, but not quite like this.

Things change fast. Have to be on your toes!

these two feet represent a whole community that walk and live in La Chureca.

It's the city dump in Managua Nicaragua. Why? Because they make money sifting and sorting through the city's garbage trying to find recyclable/ valuable items thrown out.

They work everyday except Sunday.

They have houses right next to the trash and even right in the middle of it.

We were heading into the jungle to see the rice fields. The village of Krin Krin has no running water or electricity. It's a 6 hour boat ride up the river, on the Nicaragua Honduras boarder.

Fording a river was never as intense as it was on this trip.

Sickness insued a couple days later.

It was bad!!!

it's been two and a half years since i took this photograph. i was with jack, jeremy and christina. i was really just beginning my photographic career, though I still feel as if I am beginning. I haven't been doing this that long. So much has happened, that it feels like it's been forever, but it's not... just a little while.

this is my ides of august resolution:

to get back at sharing my photos with the world. to be dedicated to photography and shooting. 5 years ago, on January 1, 2005 it was my goal to photograph daily and post a photo on a blog everyday. I made it about 350 of the first 365 days.

Now my goal will be to post at least 300 of the next 365 days. I might not post a fresh photo from each day, but I will try to post a photo of some sort to share with those of you that read this.

i've not finished a lot of things I have started over the years, so I am trying to be faithful and follow through.

the time it takes to remember

as i was driving home one evening i saw a barn. in my life i have probably taken a handful of photos of aformentioned structure. So, I thought it would be my duty for the day to make this particular barn and sunset last forever. Perhaps not the most spectacular barn or sunset ever, but they are existing together now forever, right here.

life gets crazy and we think we will remember everything about a scene or a time or place, but years later as we try to recall we can't seem to remember anything really that might have been so important that day it was happening.

let's try to recall something and remember and ponder on it for a time. for this time will one day be just a fleeting memory.

don't forget to say i love you to someone today.

They pulled me into the house because I HAD to photograph his mother. They told me she was 125 years old. The son looked about 45 years.

If the son is 45 and the mother is 125, that made her the oldest woman alive and oldest woman to have a child. I was stunned and amazed.

Truth is that I'm not sure it makes sense, but none the less, she is old and has seen a lot in her life. It was truly an honor to photograph her.

Nicaragua is an amazing place, with amazing people. Later that day I played soccer in a mud/cow pie field with the Miskito kids and got laid out several times. I thought for sure I was going to die...especially the next day when it felt like my insides were imploding! (not to be mistaken with exploding...)

i've been away from this place for a while. I own and run a coffeeshop with my wife, Lora. It's a ton of work and that makes life really crazy. I am shooting weddings now and running the shop, with her. Doing all of these things means there is little time for me to manage all of these online presences.

It brings great joy to my life when I can be disciplined and caught up and manage all things well.

I'm trying, but not doing the best job at all of it.

Often times I feel like I am way behind the curve in terms of my photography, and other times I am really happy with where I am in the photo world. There are lots of great photographers out there, doing lots of great things. I'm working on running with them. It's just hard!

Keep it real and keep on shooting. That's my goal.

Sometimes I take photos of myself. Often when I am in a hotel, I do so in the pictures on the wall. When I go back and edit. I stop and think and get inspired to keep going, to dig and find new things to shoot, to do, to feel. it's good to stop and reflect, which I need more of.

Tuesday is going to be a day when I go out and shoot for a little while. I have the day off from the shop. I'm going to get out and make art for a little while. It'll be good. I need to.

I am getting married in just a few short weeks. We are almost in the 30's range. Yesterday I ran 13.1 miles in 1 hour 51 minutes and 52 seconds. I hurt now.

My parents came in to town and they, Lora and I went to Richmond to hang out on Friday and yesterday morning. We had a great time.

This photo is from February, when I got to walk with Lora 3 days a week, to run errands while she was working. I miss those days like crazy. Now, we are both all over the place. Soon, though to become one!

I love you Lora.

tommy was a friend from charlottesville. he was the first homeless man i met here in charlottesville. if you are from here, you might recognize him. recently he has been pushing his friend Laura around in her wheelchair. he hung out often on the corner and at the bus stop on the corner of main st. and 14th. st.

he passed away early this morning at a hotel.

i'm going to miss him. he was a good friend.

I photographed Amey and Mark's wedding a few weeks ago. They were a pretty fun couple and I think we got one of the coolest jumping shots of all time.

My friends Hunter and Mika are getting married on September 20th of this year and I will be shooting their wedding. This was a fun engagement shoot we had a couple of weeks ago. I'm behind in my posts, I know, but after this weekend I am hardcore getting on top of my game.

Today I am shooting my friends wedding in Rockford Illinois. My family lives here and it's where I spent 1/4 of my life. It's good to be back, though I never get to spend too long here. I'm just back for quick trips. I go back home on Monday afternoon.

The game was a month ago, but I wanted to post at least one photo. Maybe I can be diligent and post a few more. I had another opportunity to photograph for Nike Soccer, this time I was in New Jersey with the US Men's National team vs. Argentina (the then and possibly now, number one team in the world. We tied them, which was pretty impressive.

I'm home still. The wedding I am shooting is tomorrow. I'll be back soon.

Today I went to the Apple Store with my brother and stood in line for over 4 hours waiting for a new iphone. I didn't get one. I was just there for the ride and a new case for my original iphone. I'm still a fan of it, especially because I got a new case for it. It's white. I like.

I've been rather lack-luster in terms of posting new images on here. It's hard though right now. I just recently got engaged. Well, now almost a month ago. I'm shooting lots of weddings. I'm opening a coffee shop and training an assistant how to do all of the things I normally do. It's fun, but lots of work.

This is one of my favorite building at UVA. It was supposed to be built at another school, but the plans got switched around. So, another school has the building that was supposed to be here. I like it regardless of where it was supposed to be.

So, be patient with me as I try to manage all of these things.

He lives in the dump too and is very happy. trash piles are all around. His mother is also right beside him and that is really all he cares about. The trash doesn't bother him, because he has someone right next to him who cares deeply for him.

This village is a day trip up the rio coco, in Nicaragua. On the other side of the river is Honduras. They have no electricity, running water and their kids play fútbol on the fields where the cows graze. I played fútbol in the fields with them and didn't die.

there are so many kids all over Africa, well at least that is the way it was where I was. Occasionaly there will be an older lady standing amongst the young ones. I chose to photograph her and everyone laughed about it.

It is one of the best things one can be witness to. In my humble opinion.

doesnt mean that i can maintain sanity in one area of my life and let the other areas slip away from me.

this week feels much better mentally. I've moved into a bigger room and am able to keep my life a little more tidier, which makes me feel better about myself and life.

i started working out again on monday and have been two times this week, thus the reason for me being really rediculously soar right now.

i used to be a neat freak, kind of OCD, then I went to college and was in small bedrooms or houses, with lots of people and just had too much junk. I think I'm finally in a place where I'm getting my ducks in a row.

Huffing glue is how he gets by. He says he wants to stop, but he won't give up the bottle. He's only twelve and was more strung out than anyone I had seen in a long time, or ever (outside the dump).

problems like this exist in many places around the world, but it is very prevelent here in La Chureca. It is the only way kids can cope with where they are.

all we could do was love them and walk with them. I think that meant more to them than us giving them something. Walking with them over time will be the best thing.

Dia De Luz 2008 # 2 and Margot

I really just wanted to upload an image tonight to be able to share with you that Margot (my car) left me. Someone decided she would be better suited in their hands. If I knew where she was, I wouldn't have felt a need to post tonight, as I am rather tired.

Thursday night I rolled into my apartment at 9:45 and parked in a spot. Locked the doors and went inside. At midnight my roommate came home and parked in the exact spot I had parked in 2 hours earlier. He had no idea my car had been there.

I woke up in the morning and saw this, walked around the parking lot befuddled. I laughed and said I was going to cry because someone had either stolen my car, or I was crazy.

The police showed up 5 minutes after I called them and asked if I owed anyone any money, or if I had left keys in the car, or left it unlocked. No, no and no" where my answers.

Contents this time: (as my car was broken into in January)

Sunglasses

150 cd's.

My receipts and gas log for business for 2008.

50mm macro lens I was going to return to BH Photo that day.

Several pieces of random wood.

Several pictures of Lora and me.

1 drill.

1 set of drill bits.

My dickies jacket.

Bikerack on the roof.

A stereo from my roommate that replaced the old one that was stolen before.

A one dollar bill.

A note from Lora, on the dash.

Lots of pennies.

A walmart floor mat on the drivers side. (not the one on the passangers side because someone got in my car last year with poop on their shoes and made it smelly.

My watch.

Several other random things I will probably never miss.

I can't think of anything else right now, but I'm sure I will think of more stuff at some point.

There was no glass on the ground, so they must have been good. All of my keys are accounted for, so who knows what happened. All I know is that it was gone between the hours of 9:45pm and midnight.

Lesson learned... Don't leave anything in your car and don't ever tint your windows in the state of Virginia. Move out of the recently renovated gang neighborhood. These kids have nothing and they are happy as can be. I'm trying to be happy, though I get consumed by materialism and consumeristic thinking sometimes.

Let me be grateful for what I have and let me learn to live a simple life, so there aren't big things to lose like this.

Right now I'm in a rental car that smells like smoke. I might need to change that. It's a ford focus, an okay car, but not what I would like to own. Insurance is covering the car, but I think I'm out of luck with everything else. (anyone need a bunch of cd cases?)

Living in Nueva Vida

This trip to Nicaragua found me taking a good number of portraits of people I met. I think it was my best photographic trip to date! More pictures to come. This boy is part of the feeding center program in Nueva Vida. A refugee camp for people displaced from Hurricane Mitch, back in 1999. This is the feeding center that my friends and I helped raise money to open back in 2005, when we walked across Nicaragua. Then it was feeding 90 kids, five days a week. Now they are feeding over 300 kids, five days a week. It was really cool to how it is all working.

Hope you are doing well. Life is crazy here, but going well.

I am in the midst of opening a coffee shop here in Charlottesville, so that is beginning to take up a lot of my time!

this was the group i was with when i went to new orleans back in january... the first trip of the year.

i forgot to tell everyone that they need to be able to see the camera with their whole face... oops.

next week i go to nicaragua for 9 days. oh the warm weather. i can't wait. and yes, and the kids!

nike hired me to shoot the usa v mexico soccer game last week in houston texas. this was me having a good time in the snake pit, before the match.

i had a great time in houston, though there were a few people i wish i had been able to see, that i didn't get to see.

I have a new computer and finally was able to install an old hard drive in it and see some images from a few years ago.

This is from Nicaragua, when I walked across the country back in the summer of 2005. I don't know this guy's name or what town this was in. I could show you exactly where I was when I took it, but I have no idea what the town was called, though I am pretty sure it was on our second day of walking.

We were on the road to Juba, but we were really only going as far as Pagari, when we saw this old, bombed out truck. I wonder who was driving it when it died. Want to send me to Africa? I'll gladly accept a trip, just let me know when and where you want me.
